Colima 71:
In the vibrant neighborhood of Roma Norte, Colima 71 offers a unique experience that blends high-end hospitality, architectural heritage, and contemporary creativity. This project was conceived as an intimate immersion into Mexican culture.
Housed in a former school, Colima 71 stands out for its subdued and expressive atmosphere. It is here that Ana and Joaquin, the owners, laid the foundation for a one-of-a-kind place: “We imagined a space that reflected our travels and our desire for authenticity,” says Ana. Far from standardized hotels, every corner is an extension of their vision — a vision of a living, rooted, and open Mexico. Handcrafted furniture, Oaxacan ceramic objects, and site-specific artworks — such as the monumental Quetzalcóatl sculpture made from recycled tires — create a dialogue between modernity and tradition. “Everything here was designed to tell the story of our country,” Joaquin emphasizes. The building, renovated by architect Alberto Kalach, combines simplicity and light to create a human-scale space filled with silence and texture.
Reflecting the neighborhood surrounding it, the boutique hotel embraces discreet luxury rooted in the local fabric. Roma Norte, long overlooked by the traditional tourist path, has in recent years seen a surge in interest — a movement accelerated by the pandemic. Chef-led restaurants, independent galleries, and artisan studios have all found a home here. “It has become the cultural center of gravity of the city while keeping a deeply Mexican soul,” Ana explains. Colima 71 fits naturally into this dynamic, hosting exhibitions and art performances, like the viral 2024 installation where a nine-ton Olmec head sculpture crushes a Tesla. Inside, sixteen spacious studios, each with outdoor space, feel more like city apartments than hotel rooms. The intention: to maintain a connection with the street, the light, the sounds — and allow travelers to experience the city as locals do.
Breakfast delivered to your room, artisanal tableware, coffee from small producers, fresh fruit, and pastries from Panadería Rosetta all reflect meticulous attention to detail. The team, hailing from different regions of Mexico, embodies warm hospitality and a deep commitment to personalization. Insider tips, contacts, access to anthropologist guides — everything contributes to a more meaningful discovery of the country. Sensitive to noise, Joaquin personally oversaw the acoustic treatment of the rooms: “A good hotel must also be a place of rest. Soundproofing is technical but essential.” The spaces were designed to welcome travelers like old friends, in a calm and generous environment. In their approach to hospitality, Ana and Joaquin champion a deeply Mexican vision — one rooted in care, sharing, and sincere human connection. “We’re incredibly lucky to touch people’s hearts, to help them feel the beauty of our country. It’s a privilege,” Ana concludes.
