Day of the Dead and Cempasúchil Festival:
In the heart of Mexico City, in the trendy Colonia Roma, a magical corner is getting ready to celebrate the Day of the Dead uniquely and spectacularly. Colima 71, our locally-inspired design hotel, is witness to a celebration that transcends borders and eras: the Day of the Dead.
This is one of Mexico's most emblematic festivities, a dance of colors, flavors, and emotions that honors loved ones who have crossed to the other side. Its roots trace back to Mexico's pre-Hispanic past when indigenous cultures revered the dead as an extension of life. It's a date celebrated with devotion on November 1st and 2nd, and today, it's a perfect blend of indigenous traditions and Catholic elements introduced during Spanish colonization.
The Day of the Dead wouldn't be the same without its splendid gastronomy. In every corner of Mexico, kitchens are filled with aromas that awaken the senses and soothe the soul. Pan de Muerto, with its circular shape symbolizing eternity and sugar skulls decorated with names and messages, are just a few examples of the delicacies offered.
But the most iconic dish of this celebration is mole, a complex sauce made from chilies, chocolate, and spices that varies from region to region. Its flavor evokes the depth of Mexican traditions and will take you on a culinary journey through the most authentic flavors of this special day.
The construction of altars is an essential part of this celebration. These elaborate setups are meant to receive the souls of departed loved ones who return to visit the living. Altars are adorned with portraits of the deceased, marigold flowers, candles, food, and personal items that once belonged to the departed. Every detail carries profound meaning; you can appreciate it in various altars paying tribute to ancestral traditions and lost love.
October 27, 28, and 29 are days to honor Day of the Dead traditions in the northern part of Mexico City, in the Gustavo A. Madero Town Square, where, for the first time, the "Cempasúchil Festival" will take place, a free-entry event (10:00 am to 8:00 pm) that brings together the best of Mexican gastronomy, music, and culture.
This event will feature a Gastronomic Pavilion with 50 restaurants offering everything from Mexican snacks to traditional and contemporary dishes. There will also be a Craft Bazaar, a live music stage, a "Mega Offering" at the festival's heart, and a Children's Pavilion.
The streets come alive with altars, crafts, live music, and delicious Mexican cuisine. It's a moment when life and death dance together to celebrate the ephemeral and the eternal.
At Colima 71, we invite you to join in this magical celebration. Experience firsthand the richness of Mexican traditions and discover how the Day of the Dead becomes a tribute to life itself. Our art hotel offers a cozy space where high-quality standards blend with warmth, and tradition meets innovation.
